Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough is a town and unitary authority in North Yorkshire. It is located in northeastern England. It is situated on the south side of the River Tees, at the head of its estuary. The North Sea is 11 km (7 miles) away. Middlesbrough, the largest town of the Teesside Metropolitan Area, is located on the south bank of the River Tees. It is approximately 7 miles (11 km) from the North Sea.

Middlesbrough had a population of 25 in 1801. It was a small farm town. From 1829, the coalfields of the region and its iron ore were exploited and a port was required to ship these products. The Port area developed into a metal-bashing sector, including shipbuilding and steel production. A line of smokestack works was built along the coast to Redcar. The town boomed in the 1950s and 1960s but then slowed down as the industries were displaced by foreign competition.
